BALA CYNWYD, PA – A cellular phone carrier is making a donation to an organization that fights domestic violence, and is also collecting old cell phones for victims of domestic abuse.

In celebration of its new retail store in Bala Cynwyd, Verizon Wireless is donating $3,000 to the Kristin Mitchell Foundation for Violence Against Women. Kristin was murdered by her boyfriend in 2005, three weeks after her graduation from St. Joseph’s University.

Bill Mitchell is her father: “We can no longer help Kristin, but we can help other girls.”

Mario Turco is with Verizon Wireless:

“It doesn’t have to be a Verizon Wireless phone — it can be a phone from any cellular carrier. They bring them to the store and drop them into our ‘Hopeline’ bin, and then we’ll have them recycled.”

The Kristin Mitchell Foundation is holding its second annual 5K run and walk at St. Joe’s University on Sunday.
